36 Hours in Antalya: Old Town Lanes and Waterfall Cliffs

Verified: 16 October 2026. Antalya is a city as well as a resort gateway. Behind the beach-hotel image are Roman stonework, tiled roofs, a working old-town neighborhood and cliffs that make even an ordinary afternoon walk memorable. This 36-hour route stays mostly in the city, starting at 9 a.m. and finishing at 9 p.m. the next day. It gives the coast breathing room instead of trying to fit Perge, Aspendos and a mountain excursion around a hurried lunch.

Plan the visit

Stay in or near Kaleiçi if history and restaurants are the priority. Before booking an atmospheric old house, ask about stairs, vehicle access, nighttime noise and air-conditioning. A harbor-view room can come with a steep walk. Konyaaltı works better for a beach-led stay, but means more transfers for this itinerary.

Antalya Airport publishes bus and tram options, with current departures available through Antalyakart. Check your terminal and the exact connection before assuming the tram is outside your arrival door. Budget roughly 45–90 minutes from the airport to a central hotel including waiting and the final walk; road traffic can push this higher. Local city transfers below are generous planning estimates, not timetable promises. Airport public transport, Antalyakart information

An important closure: the Ministry's current list marks Antalya Museum closed. It is excluded here. An announced future reopening is not an admission guarantee, so check the operator before adding it back. Official museum status list

Day 1: A slow circuit through Kaleiçi

9–10:30 a.m. | Breakfast and Hadrian's Gate

Start with breakfast near the eastern edge of the old town: bread, cheese, olives and eggs make a useful foundation for walking. Approach Hadrian's Gate while you are fresh, then take the nearby public route into Kaleiçi. The Roman gateway commemorates Hadrian's visit in 130 CE. Stone surfaces and changes of level deserve attention, especially after rain; you need not negotiate every ancient paving stone to appreciate the structure. National tourism guide to Kaleiçi

10:30 a.m.–noon | Houses, courtyards and a small museum

Follow a loose route through the lanes toward the Suna & İnan Kıraç Kaleiçi Museum. Allow 15–25 minutes for a walk that would be shorter without photographs. The museum occupies a traditional house and a former Orthodox church, with displays connecting domestic life and ceramics. Give it about an hour rather than expecting a vast archaeological collection. Published visitor schedules are inconsistent across official listings, so confirm the day's opening directly; if shut, keep the architectural walk and cafe break instead. Noon–2 p.m. | Piyaz and shade

Order Antalya-style piyaz, the local bean dish with a sesame-based sauce, perhaps alongside şiş köfte. Tell the restaurant about sesame allergies explicitly. Citrus preserves and the region's distinctive burnt-style ice cream offer other tastes to seek out during the stay, without turning every meal into a checklist. Have lunch away from the busiest photograph-taking corners, then return to your accommodation during the harshest heat. Antalya food traditions

2–4 p.m. | Rest first, then the harbor

In hot weather, make the rest longer and the harbor walk later. Descend through the old town for a waterfront look, allowing 20–30 minutes with slopes and pauses. Boats are an optional purchase, not a necessary part of this route. Before paying, confirm actual departure time, duration, destination, shade, toilets, boarding steps and child-size life jackets. A boat pictured beside a waterfall does not prove that every short cruise reaches it.

4–6 p.m. | Karaalioğlu Park

Walk back toward Karaalioğlu Park, roughly 20–35 minutes uphill from the harbor depending on the route. The coastal terraces give a different perspective from the waterline. Look at Hıdırlık Tower from permitted public areas; this itinerary does not assume interior access. Choose a bench and let the stop be a pause rather than another guided circuit. The municipality describes the park and the city's cliff-lined coastline. Municipal Kaleiçi guide

6–9 p.m. | Dinner near the old town

Reserve dinner if traveling during a busy holiday period. Grilled fish, vegetables or another regional dish suit the unhurried evening. Check the price and weight basis before ordering fish sold by weight. Finish with a short walk on well-used streets, taking a taxi if your hotel is farther along the coast. There is no reason to cross the entire city for one more view.

Day 2: Choose the coast over a coach circuit

9 a.m.–noon | Lower Düden waterfall

After breakfast, travel east to Lower Düden, also called Aşağı Düden or Karpuzkaldıran. Allow approximately 25–50 minutes by taxi from central Antalya; public transport can take 45–75 minutes including waiting and walking. This is the waterfall that drops over the coastal cliffs into the sea. Upper Düden is a different inland destination, so show the precise name when arranging transport. Spend an hour on designated viewing paths, keeping children behind barriers and away from wet edges. Official waterfall guide

Noon–3 p.m. | Lunch and a genuine break

Eat nearby or return to the center, then leave the early afternoon free. With small children, this is the right place for a nap rather than another cross-city journey. If the weather is stormy, skip exposed cliff paths altogether. The waterfall is not a swimming stop, and no photograph justifies stepping beyond a railing.

3–6 p.m. | Konyaaltı, or stay local

For more sea air, take a taxi or current bus connection west to Konyaaltı, allowing about 20–45 minutes from the center, more in traffic. Walk a manageable section of the waterfront and have a drink in the shade. Swimming is optional and should depend on flags, lifeguard coverage, weather and ability; the shore is not a guaranteed gentle paddling beach. Alternatively, stay in Kaleiçi and revisit the lanes you liked, avoiding another transfer entirely.

6–9 p.m. | One final Turkish supper

Return with a comfortable buffer, collect anything left at the hotel and choose a relaxed final meal. A full-day ancient-site tour belongs on a longer visit; if archaeology is your main interest, substitute a separately planned Perge excursion for Day 2 rather than bolting it onto this coastal route.

Three quieter worthwhile corners

  • Karaalioğlu's inner paths, away from its most popular viewing terraces.
  • The museum's domestic-life displays, when open, for a smaller-scale history stop.
  • Kaleiçi's side lanes between major sights, explored respectfully without entering private courtyards.

Practical checks

Summer heat changes this itinerary more than any attraction queue: carry water, take shade breaks and shorten exposed walks. Historic lanes have slopes, steps and uneven surfaces; request specific access information rather than assuming a harbor lift or museum entrance works for every wheelchair. Mosques are active places of worship: dress appropriately, follow local entry instructions and avoid sightseeing during prayer. Before travel, read current official advice on regional restrictions, demonstrations, wildfires and severe weather; advice for Türkiye's border areas should not be mistaken for a blanket description of Antalya.
