36 Hours in Arezzo: Piero, Piazza Grande and a Slower Tuscany
Verified: 16 October 2026. Arezzo's rewards are unusually concentrated, but the city asks you to pay attention. A half-hour with Piero della Francesca can be more memorable than three hurried churches, and the slope of Piazza Grande is worth experiencing from a cafe table as well as through a camera. This 36-hour stay starts at 9 a.m. and finishes at 9 p.m. the next day. It pairs a few significant interiors with open-air pauses, rather than using Arezzo as the starting line for a race through neighboring hill towns.
Arrange the essential reservation first
Book the Bacci Chapel fresco visit at the Basilica of San Francesco before building the rest of the route. The museum authority requires reservations for ordinary visits, with timed groups and a 30-minute slot. Its published process calls for payment at least three working days ahead and does not accept same-day reservations; check the current official booking calendar rather than arriving on the assumption that a ticket will be available. First-Sunday free-entry arrangements differ. Wednesday is absent from the regular opening schedule, and Sunday opening is in the afternoon. Official San Francesco visitor rules
From the railway station, allow roughly 15–25 minutes uphill to the central sights, longer with luggage. Stay between the station and historic center for easier transfers, or higher up for atmosphere with more climbing. Autolinee Toscane publishes local routes and current maps if you prefer to ride part of the way. Arezzo transport information
Day 1: A painting, a square and the upper city
9–10 a.m. | Breakfast near San Francesco
Start with coffee and a pastry, then arrive early for the fresco reservation. Avoid using every spare minute for shopping: ticket checks and finding the correct entrance are more important than a last photograph. If your slot is in the afternoon, exchange this block with the exterior walk around Piazza Grande and keep the other timed commitments loose.
10–11 a.m. | Piero della Francesca's painted world
Use the period before your slot to read a short explanation of the Legend of the True Cross. Inside the Bacci Chapel, concentrate on two or three scenes: the placement of figures, their stillness and the architecture around them. You do not need to solve the entire narrative during a single visit. The basilica contains other paintings too, but the booked chapel time is the priority. For children, looking for repeated shapes and colors can be more engaging than a long art-history lecture. Official tourism introduction to the frescoes
11 a.m.–1 p.m. | Piazza Grande at an easy pace
Walk uphill toward Piazza Grande, allowing 10–20 minutes with stops. Look at the changing facades and arcades, then sit long enough to appreciate how the square works as a shared space. Browse a few shops, but do not assume antique-looking objects have verified age or provenance. On the first Sunday of the month and the preceding Saturday, the antiques fair transforms the center; it is a reason to book accommodation early and simplify the walking route. 1–3 p.m. | Lunch and a break
Order something grounded in the surrounding countryside: a bean or bread-based soup, seasonal pasta, or a meat dish if that suits you. The local tourism food guide describes acquacotta and the area's broader traditions, including bringoli associated particularly with Anghiari in the province. Ask about the day's cooking rather than expecting every regional specialty on every menu. Gattò all'aretina is a local dessert to seek out later; ask about alcohol and ingredients when choosing for children. Aretine food traditions
3–5:30 p.m. | Cathedral and the Prato
Continue uphill to the cathedral, allowing 15–25 minutes from the lower center. Visit respectfully around services, looking for Piero's Magdalene and the stained glass rather than trying to examine every artwork. Then use the nearby Prato walkway for a bench break and broader views. This is a better afternoon for families than another long enclosed museum. Cathedral visitor introduction
If the Medici Fortress is open on your date and everyone has energy, make it a replacement for some of the park time. Check its seasonal ticket and event arrangements first; the outside hilltop walk remains worthwhile without admission. Fortress information
5:30–9 p.m. | Downhill to dinner
Return to your accommodation before supper. Choose a restaurant you can reach without another steep cross-city walk, and reserve on market weekends. A glass of regional wine is optional; the evening's pleasure can just as easily be a good plate of food and time in the square. Finish at a comfortable hour rather than extending the day because the streets look inviting.
Day 2: Artists at home and an older Arezzo
9–11:30 a.m. | Casa Vasari and San Domenico
After breakfast, visit Casa Vasari in a confirmed admission slot. The house is particularly interesting as an artist's statement about his profession and ambitions, with decorated rooms that deserve a close look. Allow about an hour. Tuesday is its regular closure, and Sunday visits finish earlier than weekday ones. Official pages differ on whether individual advance reservation is compulsory or optional, so booking ahead is the simplest approach; groups have additional rules. Ministry's Casa Vasari information
Continue a short distance to San Domenico, when open outside worship, to see Cimabue's painted crucifix. One focused stop is enough: take a seat and compare its visual language with yesterday's Piero. Cimabue's crucifix
11:30 a.m.–2 p.m. | An unhurried lunch
Walk back toward the center, browsing only where something genuinely interests you. Have lunch, then a short rest. If today is Tuesday, swap Casa Vasari with yesterday's upper-city outing when the reservation and other closures allow; otherwise accept that one museum will need a future visit.
2–4 p.m. | Archaeology, if you want another interior
The National Archaeological Museum and Roman amphitheater area offer a different story from the Renaissance-focused first day. Allow 60–90 minutes for the museum and confirm the current outdoor access arrangements; museum admission does not justify wandering beyond barriers. Its official interpretation includes digital resources in Italian and English. Families can choose this instead of Casa Vasari rather than doing both. Archaeological museum operator
4–9 p.m. | A final cafe and supper
Keep the rest of the afternoon free for a favorite street, a pastry or purchases. Collect luggage with time to spare if departing later, and finish with a relaxed early dinner. The station's downhill direction does not eliminate the need for a connection buffer.
Three quieter worthwhile places
- San Domenico's square and church, away from the busiest shopping route.
- The Prato walkway, especially when the main square is full of market stalls.
- Casa Vasari's small rooms, visited in a reserved slot rather than squeezed between commitments.
Access and seasonal checks
Arezzo is hilly, and stone paving can be slippery when wet. Ask individual museums about lifts, thresholds and accessible toilets; do not infer access from a central address. In summer, keep the climb to the cathedral out of the hottest hours. Religious services, special exhibitions and festivals can change entry arrangements. Verify child concessions for each ticket and reserve any required child slot even when admission is free. The best version of this itinerary leaves one optional museum unvisited rather than making everyone tired of art.
