36 Hours in Bergamo: Upper-Town Squares, Venetian Walls and Great Paintings

Verified: 16 October 2026. Unpublished draft. Visit durations and transfer ranges are planning estimates; verify date-specific opening before booking.

Bergamo deserves more than the gap between a flight and a transfer to Milan. Its hilltop Città Alta and lower-city neighborhoods offer different pleasures: compact historic squares above, painting collections and everyday streets below. Give each a substantial part of your stay. You can enjoy the views without climbing every tower or taking both funiculars.

A lower-town base makes station and airport transfers straightforward; an upper-town stay puts evening atmosphere on your doorstep but may involve steps and restricted vehicle access. Ask accommodation about the final luggage approach. ATB's Airport Bus links BGY with Bergamo; select a ticket valid for your full journey rather than assuming a city-only fare covers the airport. Day 1: Città Alta without a race

9:00–10:00 | Breakfast and the journey uphill

Have breakfast before taking the city funicular or bus toward Città Alta. Allow 25–45 minutes from a central lower-town base, including walking and potential queues. A short ride does not guarantee a short total transfer on a busy weekend. Follow ATB's validation instructions whenever boarding or changing vehicles. ATB electronic-ticket guidance

Walk from Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe toward Piazza Vecchia. Slow down at the square rather than immediately joining the next queue: the relationship between civic buildings, tower and neighboring religious precinct is the point.

10:00–11:15 | Santa Maria Maggiore and its neighbors

Move through to Piazza Duomo for Santa Maria Maggiore. Allow about 45 minutes inside, then look at the Colleoni Chapel exterior and the surrounding architecture. Choose a few details that catch your eye instead of expecting to understand every decorative layer in one visit.

The official tourism schedule currently lists Santa Maria Maggiore Monday–Saturday 9:00–18:00, with Sunday and holiday access interrupted between 10:30 and 13:30. On those days, start with the civic square and return after lunch. Religious functions can further alter access. The Colleoni Chapel has its own midday closure and a no-photography rule; check signs before entering. Visit Bergamo: current monument schedules

11:15–12:30 | See the town from the Campanone

Choose the Campanone as your one elevated viewpoint. Allow 30–45 minutes including waiting, longer if you also explore the associated Palazzo del Podestà museum. The tower's lift reaches the first terrace; it does not establish that every part of the visit is equally accessible.

The operator currently lists Tuesday–Friday opening 10:00–18:00 and weekends/holidays until 19:00, with last entry 30 minutes before closing. Monday is not a regular opening day. If closed, keep the square and walls as your viewpoints instead. The famous evening bells sound at 22:00, but that is not a promise of public tower entry at that time. Campanone operator information

12:30–14:00 | Casoncelli for lunch

Order casoncelli, the local filled pasta commonly served with butter and sage, checking the filling and bacon garnish if you avoid meat. Polenta is another strong regional choice, especially with a carefully chosen accompaniment. Ask about portion size before ordering both. A café afterward can be more enjoyable than immediately climbing another hill. Official tourism: casoncelli and polenta

14:00–16:00 | One quieter upper-town stop

Walk a few minutes to the Convento di San Francesco near Piazza Mercato del Fieno. When open, allow 45–60 minutes for its cloisters, surviving frescoes and terrace, choosing any exhibition selectively. It is a different experience from the central church interiors and can be a useful pause from the busiest lanes. Consult its own opening calendar; museum-network venues do not all share identical hours. Convento di San Francesco

On a garden-friendly day, substitute the Colle Aperto botanical garden rather than adding it. Its approach involves steps, and the published information includes seasonal hours and some older notices, so check current access directly. It is not a dependable winter fallback. 16:00–evening | Walk a section of the walls

Choose a comfortable stretch of the Venetian walls toward Porta San Giacomo, allowing 45–60 minutes with viewpoints and a stop. Stay on public pedestrian routes, keep children back from edges and avoid slick stone in wet weather. You need not complete a circuit to appreciate the upper town's setting.

Return to your accommodation or stay for dinner. If you choose dessert, the sweet polenta e osei is a cake rather than a bowl of cornmeal; share a small portion. Bergamo Chamber of Commerce: polenta e osei

Day 2: Paintings and the lower town

10:00–12:00 | Give Accademia Carrara real time

After breakfast, head to Accademia Carrara, allowing roughly 20–40 minutes from Città Alta depending on whether you walk downhill or use transport. Reserve around two hours for the paintings, focusing on a manageable selection. The collection rewards looking rather than rushing between famous names.

The museum currently closes Tuesdays. Other weekdays open 9:00–17:30, while Saturdays, Sundays and holidays open 10:00–18:00; last entry is 45 minutes before closing. Check the full calendar for holidays and temporary arrangements. If day two is Tuesday, swap the two days so you can visit the Carrara on Monday; the Campanone can then be omitted or visited on another open day. Accademia Carrara tickets and hours

12:00–14:00 | Borgo Santa Caterina and lunch

Walk into nearby Borgo Santa Caterina for shops, lunch and a less monumental view of the city. Allow 15–20 minutes for the neighborhood transition, then let the choice of café or restaurant determine the pace. The district's sanctuary is an optional respectful stop when open, not another required interior. Official tourism: Borgo Santa Caterina

14:00–evening | Finish in the lower city

Spend the afternoon strolling back through the lower city, stopping for a gelato, a bookshop or a café. Preserve time for your bags and onward transport. Airport-bound travelers should add a traffic and queue buffer beyond the published bus journey; the same applies to a train connection after a busy weekend.

Three quieter places and important adjustments

  • San Francesco's cloisters: a short art-and-architecture visit away from the busiest square, subject to its museum opening.
  • Colle Aperto botanical garden: a seasonal alternative with steps, best used instead of another attraction.
  • Borgo Santa Caterina by day: a neighborhood lunch and shop walk, with no promise of quiet during events or evenings.

The Museo dell'Ottocento inside the Rocca is currently closed for extraordinary maintenance, according to the museum network's notice; do not add it as a rainy-day certainty. Museum network closure notice

Families should keep the afternoon break and choose one major interior per half-day. Upper-town slopes and paving make comfortable shoes essential. For mobility access, check the exact attraction route and funicular arrangements individually. A sunny day suits the walls, while rain is a reason to shorten outdoor walking, not to rush through every available museum.
