36 Hours in Bursa: Silk Courtyards and Early Ottoman Streets
Verified: 16 October 2026. Draft for Only36Hours; not published.
Bursa's historic centre is a city of courtyards: places to trade, pray, drink tea and pause between streets that climb towards the mountain. Its early Ottoman monuments deserve a slower visit than the standard day trip from Istanbul. Spend these 36 hours in the city itself, with one day around the bazaars and eastern monuments and another around Muradiye and the old hilltop quarter. Uludağ and Cumalıkızık are worthwhile separate outings, not effortless additions to this route. National tourism overview of Bursa's sights
Arriving and choosing a base
Stay around the historic centre or Heykel for the shortest everyday walks. If arriving by BUDO sea bus, note that the current Istanbul departure point is Kabataş and the Bursa landing is Mudanya, well outside the city centre. Check the ticket carefully rather than following older Eminönü directions. Allow roughly 45–75 minutes for the onward road transfer from Mudanya, depending on traffic, and more for public-transport changes. BUDO's FAQ states that it does not provide a shuttle service. Weather can cancel sailings, so avoid making the final boat part of a tight international-flight connection. For buses and Bursaray, consult BURULAŞ's current routes and BursaKart information. A short taxi is useful between separated historic quarters; agree on use of the meter and request a child seat in advance when needed. Local transport operator
Day 1: Markets, craft and tilework
09:00–10:00 | Breakfast and the Grand Mosque
Have breakfast before approaching Ulu Cami. Choose tahinli pide if you enjoy sweet sesame-rich bread, or a simpler savoury breakfast. Visit the mosque outside prayer, allowing around 30–45 minutes if access is available. This is an active religious building: remove shoes where instructed, dress modestly and follow staff guidance. Women should bring a scarf for mosque entry. Friday midday is particularly unsuitable for tourist scheduling; move this visit to another available period rather than waiting in the worshippers' way.
10:00–12:00 | Koza Han and the bazaar
Walk the short distance into the market quarter and Koza Han. Spend time looking at the courtyard and the silk shops, then sit down for tea. The national tourism guide identifies Koza Han as a continuing silk-trading centre. Ask about fibre content and production rather than assuming that every scarf is locally woven silk.
Keep the market route flexible. Shop hours and religious holidays vary, and an open courtyard does not mean every business is trading. With children, agree a meeting point and keep the browsing session short enough that it remains enjoyable.
12:00–14:00 | Bursa on a plate
Make lunch the day's substantial meal. İskender kebap brings meat, pide bread, tomato sauce, butter and yoghurt together; pideli köfte is another local bread-and-meat combination. Choose one rather than ordering both as if they were small snacks. Candied chestnuts make an easy shared sweet afterwards. Check dairy, sesame and nut ingredients carefully for allergies. 14:00–15:15 | The City Museum
Allow a 10–15-minute walk toward Bursa Kent Müzesi. Its exhibits introduce local history, trades and silk production, a useful counterpart to the shops you have just seen. Give it an hour rather than trying to read every panel. The museum operator’s published brochure lists Tuesday–Sunday 09:00–17:30, closed Mondays; confirm special-date changes. If Day 1 is Monday, move this visit to Day 2 afternoon and use the spare time for a longer lunch or rest. Municipal museums brochure
15:15–17:30 | Irgandı and the Green Mosque quarter
Continue east toward Irgandı Bridge, then uphill to the Green Mosque and Green Tomb area, allowing about 25–40 minutes of total walking between stops. A taxi for the uphill section is sensible with tired children or limited mobility.
Irgandı's shops connect commerce with architecture in an especially compact setting. Browse whatever is open without expecting a scheduled craft demonstration. Municipal heritage account of Irgandı
At the Green Mosque, focus on the tilework and carved entrance when visiting is permitted. The municipal description also notes internal changes of level; ask about access rather than assuming the whole interior is step-free. Visit the nearby tomb only if open, and keep conversation and photography respectful. Municipal Green Mosque guide
18:00–20:30 | A light dinner near your base
Return by taxi or walk downhill towards the centre, budgeting 20–35 minutes. After a rich lunch, soup, vegetables and bread may be more appealing than another large meat meal. Ask about stock and butter if eating vegetarian. Check restaurant hours during Ramadan or religious holidays, when the rhythm of meals can change.
Day 2: Muradiye and the old hilltop
09:00–11:30 | Muradiye's courtyards and tombs
After breakfast, take a taxi to Muradiye, allowing roughly 10–20 minutes from the central hotel area. Explore the religious complex and whichever tombs are open, with plenty of time to sit. This was the last sultan-founded complex in Bursa and provides a quieter setting for understanding Ottoman dynastic history. Opening of individual buildings can differ; confirm current visitor access locally rather than assuming a single ticket unlocks everything.
Stay on designated paths and explain to children that these are burial places, not play areas. A compact visit of 60–90 minutes, followed by a neighbourhood tea break, is enough for most first-time visitors.
11:30–14:00 | Lunch and the climb toward Tophane
Have lunch locally, then take a taxi toward Tophane or allow roughly 25–40 minutes for the walk, including hills and crossings. The hilltop quarter gives a useful overview of the city you explored yesterday. Look at the clock tower and the surrounding historic area from public paths; no tower climb is assumed. Visit the Osman and Orhan tombs only where current access allows.
14:00–16:30 | Descend at an easy pace
Walk down toward the bazaars, allowing 20–30 minutes before stops. Revisit a shop you liked or take a café break. If the City Museum was closed on Monday, this is its replacement slot: shorten shopping and head there before its closing time. This leaves room for an unrushed visit without crossing the city again later.
16:30–20:00 | A final meal, with departure time protected
Finish with an early dinner or collect bags for your onward journey. Travellers returning via Mudanya should leave the centre with a generous road and boarding allowance, checked against the actual sailing. If staying another night, enjoy the centre without adding an evening mountain excursion.
Three quieter worthwhile places
- Muradiye's courtyard spaces: pause between tomb visits, outside worship and group arrivals.
- Irgandı Bridge: a short craft-oriented stop rather than a full shopping expedition.
- Bursa City Museum: a calmer indoor alternative to a crowded market, except when school groups are visiting.
Family, access and seasonal checks
The route includes hills, busy roads and historic steps. Carry water, allow taxi shortcuts and confirm accessible entrances individually. Summer afternoons favour shaded breaks; winter rain makes stone paving slippery. Keep valuables secure in bazaars, avoid demonstrations and follow local safety notices. Check official Türkiye travel advice before departure, especially if combining Bursa with other regions. Official safety guidance
