36 Hours in the Cinque Terre: Sea Lanes, Vineyard Villages and Time to Linger
Verified: 16 October 2026. Transfer times are planning allowances, not published departures.
The Cinque Terre rewards a smaller itinerary than its name suggests. Trying to collect all five villages, a boat ride and a coastal hike in a day mostly reveals crowded platforms. This plan uses Manarola as a base, gives Riomaggiore and Corniglia proper time, and offers a short inland escape to Volastra. Vernazza and Monterosso can wait for another visit. Arrive before the first morning and leave after dinner on Day 2; check luggage storage before committing to a late departure.
Getting oriented
Travel by rail through La Spezia or Levanto. Within the villages, expect sloping lanes, steps and luggage carried some distance from the station. Ask accommodation about the actual approach, rather than relying on a map pin. Adjacent train journeys are short, but allow 20–40 minutes for walking, queues, the platform and the ride. Trenitalia's enhanced Cinque Terre service and special fares are seasonal; its published 2026 special-fare period runs from 14 March to 1 November. Do not assume summer frequency in winter. Trenitalia information.
Compare individual tickets with the Cinque Terre Treno Card for your dates. The card includes specified regional second-class travel between La Spezia and Levanto, park buses and covered walking routes. A day means the calendar day, ending at midnight, rather than 24 hours from first use. Prices vary by date category. Park card conditions.
Day 1: Manarola and a village above the crowds
09:00–12:00 | Harbour lanes and the upper village
Have breakfast before wandering down toward Manarola's harbour. Stay on designated public paths and give residents and working boats room. The harbour is a place to look at the sea, not a guaranteed safe swimming stop: rough water can make exposed edges dangerous.
Then climb slowly toward San Lorenzo and Piazza Papa Innocenzo IV. Allow 15–25 minutes uphill, with pauses. The church area offers a different perspective from the familiar waterfront photograph, with houses and cultivated slopes competing for attention. Enter only if open and outside worship; the square is worthwhile independently. Children can look for the separate bell tower before choosing a snack stop. Park description of San Lorenzo.
12:00–16:00 | Lunch, then optional Volastra
Eat a proper lunch in Manarola before deciding whether everyone wants another outing. For a quieter afternoon, ask the park information point for the current bus to Volastra and its return departures. Allow roughly an hour each way including reaching the stop and waiting, rather than treating the short drive as the whole transfer. Do not rely on a saved timetable from a previous season.
In Volastra, keep the visit modest: village lanes, the exterior of the sanctuary of Nostra Signora della Salute and a pause to appreciate the cultivated hillside. The park identifies this sanctuary as a local landmark. This is not an instruction to descend on a vineyard trail; return by bus unless you have separately checked the route, weather and your group's ability. Sanctuary information. If buses do not fit, stay in Manarola and take an unhurried afternoon break.
16:00–20:30 | Rest and a coastal dinner
Return to your accommodation before dinner. Look for anchovies, vegetables dressed with local olive oil, or a simple pasta dish. Salted Monterosso anchovies are a documented local speciality, although they are not the same preparation as fresh fried anchovies. Adults interested in wine can ask about Cinque Terre DOC or the sweet Sciacchetrà; check the serving size and price before ordering. Local anchovies, park food and wine directory.
Day 2: A reserved coastal walk and Corniglia
09:00–12:00 | Riomaggiore and the Via dell'Amore
Take the train to Riomaggiore after breakfast, leaving a generous margin before a reserved Via dell'Amore slot, ideally around 10:30. Walk through the village first if time permits; do not squeeze a steep harbour detour into the final minutes before entry.
The current Italian park guidance includes Via dell'Amore access with the relevant Cinque Terre cards, but a timed reservation is still required. Visitors travel one way from Riomaggiore toward Manarola, with a visit of approximately 30 minutes. Inclusion in a pass does not itself secure a slot. Older English information may describe different ticket arrangements, so follow the current booking checkout and Italian park guidance. Current park rules, municipal visiting conditions.
If the path is closed or sold out, return by train. Do not substitute the steep inland route automatically. The separate low coastal section between Manarola and Corniglia is currently marked closed by the park. Manarola–Corniglia trail status.
12:00–16:30 | Corniglia without a rushed stair climb
After returning to Manarola, take the train to Corniglia and use the station-to-village shuttle if operating. Allow 45–60 minutes overall, including the bus queue. Corniglia stands above its station; the stairway is not an effortless alternative for tired children or luggage.
Have lunch in the village, then wander toward San Pietro and quieter side lanes. This is the afternoon to sit with a drink rather than add another village. Keep voices low around homes, and treat an open church as a place of worship. For orientation, the park's heritage guide describes Corniglia and its church; its older transport and trail information should not be used for current planning. Park heritage guide.
16:30–20:30 | Return, collect bags and eat early
Return to Manarola with a buffer before dinner or your onward connection. If leaving that evening, choose the train first and work dinner backward from it. An early meal is more relaxing than discovering that your preferred restaurant opens too late for departure.
Three quieter worthwhile places
- San Lorenzo's upper square: a pause above Manarola's waterfront, particularly away from excursion peaks.
- Volastra's sanctuary surroundings: a bus-accessible inland alternative, conditional on confirmed return transport.
- Corniglia's San Pietro area: linger away from the village's busiest lunch tables; quietness is relative in peak season.
Family, access and seasonal essentials
Bring supportive footwear, water and sun protection. The park warns against exposed hiking in the hottest part of summer days. This route deliberately avoids making a long hike essential. Check the live trail network and weather before any added walk; closures after storms override an itinerary. Park trail network, heat guidance.
For younger children, shorten Day 2 to Riomaggiore and Manarola. Confirm current child-ticket categories during purchase; the Via dell'Amore operator lists free admission for children under four accompanied by an eligible adult, but this does not establish rules for every transport service. Steps, slopes and crowded platforms mean the itinerary is not universally step-free. Visitors using wheelchairs should arrange station assistance and verify the exact path entrance, lifts and accommodation approach before booking. Boats are an optional seasonal extra, subject to sea conditions, rather than a necessary connection in this plan.
