36 Hours in Kaunas: Two Rivers, Modernist Streets and Lithuanian Art
Kaunas has two particularly rewarding scales: the small streets around its medieval castle and the confident avenues of the city that served as Lithuania’s provisional capital between the world wars. Give each a day. You will see how rivers shaped the older town, then how architecture expressed a young state’s ambitions. The modernist districts of Naujamiestis and Žaliakalnis form the UNESCO-listed ensemble; the designation is not simply a label for the medieval centre. UNESCO’s description
Stay between the Old Town and Laisvės alėja, arrive the evening before, and expect mostly walking with an occasional bus or taxi. This plan deliberately leaves distant attractions such as Pažaislis and the Ninth Fort for a longer visit. They deserve dedicated time rather than being squeezed between central museums.
Before you go
Museum calendars matter. Monday closes many of the main collections, and Kaunas Castle’s interior normally opens Sundays only from June through August. Swap the days when that helps, or use the outdoor alternatives below. The Folk Music Museum’s exhibition remains closed for renovation following its 8 November 2025 closure; its continuing prearranged educational activities do not mean ordinary gallery access has resumed. For local buses and trolleybuses, consult Kaunas public transport’s current ticket guidance and validate the ticket as required on boarding. A Žiogas card is one option. Do not assume a city transport pass covers the Aleksotas funicular: the operator specifically excludes ordinary period transport tickets. Public transport ticket information, funicular operator
Day 1: The Old Town and the river view
9–11 a.m. | Breakfast, castle and the confluence
Start with breakfast near the Old Town, then walk to Kaunas Castle. Its surviving fabric and reconstructed elements make more sense as part of a changing defensive site than as an intact medieval palace. If open, spend 30–45 minutes inside; otherwise, the exterior is enough to orient yourself before a walk through the riverside park toward the meeting of the Nemunas and Neris.
The castle’s published interior schedule is Tuesday–Friday from 10 a.m., plus Saturdays; Sunday access is seasonal. On the last Tuesday of the month, morning maintenance delays entry until noon. Use the outdoor walk first on that day and decide whether to return after lunch. Castle visitor information
Keep children away from unprotected water edges. In icy, windy or wet conditions, shorten the park section rather than chasing the furthest viewpoint.
11 a.m.–2 p.m. | Town Hall Square, lunch and one museum
Return to Town Hall Square and explore nearby lanes before lunch. The Town Hall museum is the best single indoor introduction to the city in this part of the route. Schedule it after lunch on Thursday–Sunday, when the current visitor page gives noon opening; Tuesday–Wednesday it opens earlier. Allow an hour rather than treating the building as a quick photograph.
It closes Mondays, with additional public-holiday exceptions and reduced hours before holidays. The last Tuesday’s morning maintenance also applies here. A tower visit is not something to assume comes with every ordinary admission: ask about the available access and tours. Town Hall visitor information
For lunch, try cepelinai, substantial potato dumplings commonly served with rich toppings. Share a portion if you want a lighter afternoon and ask about the filling and sauce before assuming a meat-free option is vegetarian. Lithuania Travel on cepelinai
2–4 p.m. | Aleksotas, with an easy fallback
Walk south across the river bridge, allowing roughly 20–30 minutes from the square to the Aleksotas funicular’s lower station. Ride up for the city panorama if operating, then allow time simply to look across the roofline and river. The operator currently lists daily service from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., interrupted by a noon–1 p.m. lunch break. Maintenance can temporarily suspend it, so check the notice page before setting out. Aleksotas funicular
Do not make the nearby stairs a compulsory fallback for visitors with limited mobility. If the lift is unavailable, return to the Old Town waterfront or take a taxi to an appropriate viewpoint after confirming the drop-off and access. Ask the operator about wheelchair and stroller arrangements rather than assuming a historic carriage is fully accessible.
4–8 p.m. | Rest, then dinner
Return to your accommodation for a break before dinner around the Old Town or western Laisvės alėja. Choose a restaurant with a menu that suits your group rather than seeking every national dish at once. A warm soup, fish or vegetable dish can balance a dumpling lunch. Leave room for a pastry and a short evening stroll, but in winter move any scenic walking into daylight.
Day 2: A modern city and an artist’s imagination
9–11 a.m. | Laisvės alėja and nearby streets
Walk east along Laisvės alėja after breakfast, then turn toward V. Putvinskio Street. Notice rounded corners, horizontal windows and the different ways interwar buildings sit beside older ones. This is an inhabited city, so view private buildings from public streets and avoid entering residential stairwells without permission.
A 60–90-minute loop with a coffee stop is sufficient. Architecture enthusiasts can arrange a specialist tour in advance; families may prefer choosing three contrasting façades and letting children describe what makes each different. UNESCO’s account provides the historical context without requiring you to visit every listed building.
11 a.m.–1 p.m. | Čiurlionis, without rushing
Enter the M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art at V. Putvinskio 55. Give the painter-composer’s work 90 minutes, including time with the music if available. His imagined landscapes and symbolic forms reward looking closely at a few works rather than walking past everything.
The current schedule is Tuesday and Friday–Sunday 10 a.m.–6 p.m., Wednesday–Thursday 11 a.m.–7 p.m., with Monday closure and last admission half an hour before closing. The 11 a.m. start here works across its regular open days. On Monday, replace this block with a longer architectural walk and café stop, or consider the separately scheduled Sugihara House alternative below. Museum visitor page
1–4 p.m. | Lunch and a small discovery
Eat nearby, then make a short detour to the Courtyard Gallery at E. Ožeškienės 21A. Its art grew from stories of neighbours; visit quietly, keep entrances clear and remember that it is still a residential courtyard. Fifteen to thirty minutes is enough. Finish with a café, bookshop or luggage collection rather than adding a second large museum. Kaunas tourism’s 2026 local guide
Three quieter worthwhile alternatives
- Courtyard Gallery: a small-scale contrast to monumental architecture. Quiet behaviour matters more than getting an unobstructed photograph.
- Sugihara House: replace part of Day 2 with this museum about diplomat Chiune Sugihara and his wartime rescue visas. Allow 15–25 minutes by taxi from the centre and about an hour inside. The operator lists Monday–Friday 11 a.m.–4 p.m.; weekends and other times require an arrangement for groups of five or more. Its subject deserves age-appropriate explanation for children. Sugihara House
- The Čiurlionis museum’s inner courtyard: the cross-crafting display offers a different rhythm within the museum visit. Ask staff about current access; it is not a separate always-open public park.
