36 Hours in Kuldīga: Waterfalls, Wooden Houses and a Slower Latvian Weekend
Kuldīga's great pleasure is the closeness of things: the Venta spreads across a broad rock ledge, the Alekšupīte slips alongside house walls, and old streets lead between tiled roofs and timber façades. Its old town joined UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2023 for a remarkably preserved urban landscape shaped by Baltic trading and craft traditions. The best short visit gives that landscape time to register. UNESCO.
Plan to arrive the previous evening if you want two relaxed days. This itinerary stays mainly on foot, with an optional second-day cave excursion only when its seasonal opening is confirmed. It works particularly well Tuesday–Sunday, when Villa Bangert is normally open.
Day 1: Follow the water through the old town
9:00–11:00: Breakfast, the square and Alekšupīte
Begin with breakfast near the old town centre, then take a slow loop from Town Hall Square along Baznīcas iela and the nearby lanes. Look for the small differences between wooden doors, masonry houses and rooflines. This is a lived-in town, so an attractive courtyard is not automatically a public passage.
Pause at the bridges over the Alekšupīte, where the stream presses close to old buildings. View it from public streets and bridges rather than climbing down into the channel. A local guide can make this more than an architectural stroll: the tourism office lists English-speaking guides and suggests about 90 minutes to two hours for a city tour, booked individually rather than assumed to depart daily. Historic centre, guide directory.
11:00–12:30: Venta Rapid and the brick bridge
Continue toward the Old Brick Bridge, approximately 10–15 minutes from the square without stops. Take in the waterfall from the established viewpoints, then cross the bridge if the weather and pavement conditions are comfortable. The pleasure is its breadth and sound rather than a dramatic vertical plunge. The tourism authority describes a waterfall roughly 249 metres wide, with its visible width varying with river level.
Spring can bring migrating vimba attempting to leap the ledge. Treat that as a seasonal possibility, not a promised wildlife show. Keep children well away from the water and do not wade onto the falls for a photograph. Wet rock, high water and ice change the risks substantially. Venta Rapid.
12:30–16:00: Lunch, Villa Bangert and the City Garden
Choose lunch on whichever bank you have reached. Café Riverside is listed beside the bridge at Stendes iela 2a, while Bangert's is on the old-town side at Pils iela 1. Both allow you to stay close to the afternoon route; check current menus and reserve for a busy weekend rather than assuming an outdoor table. Riverside listing, Bangert's.
After lunch, give the District Museum in Villa Bangert at Pils iela 5 about an hour. The furnished early-20th-century apartment changes the scale from streets and monuments to domestic life. The museum's own English page currently lists Tuesday–Sunday 10:00–18:00, Monday closed. Older tourist maps show different Tuesday hours and free entry; use the current museum page for admissions instead. Museum information.
Then wander the City Garden beside it. Paths, water features and Līvija Rezevska's sculptures make this an easy decompression stop, not another compulsory tour. Children might choose a sculpture to sketch or compare with the others. Stay off fragile remains and supervise around water. City Garden.
16:00–20:30: Rest, a short stroll and dinner
Take a proper break before dinner. In summer, return to the bridge area in the softer evening light; in late autumn and winter, do your longer outdoor walk before darkness and keep the evening close to your accommodation.
Look for a seasonal fish or vegetable dish, potatoes and Latvian rye bread rather than expecting every restaurant to reproduce a historical menu. If available, try sklandrausis, a Kurzeme speciality with a rye crust and potato-and-carrot filling. Ask a bakery or the information centre where it is being made that day; availability in the region does not mean every Kuldīga café stocks it. Kurzeme food traditions, Latvian cuisine.
Day 2: Choose a river walk or seasonal caves
9:30–12:00: The unhurried town option
After breakfast, follow a manageable section of the Venta's left-bank walking trail from the Pils iela area. Walk outward for 30–40 minutes, then return, with pauses for birds, river views and a bench. The official route is 2.4 kilometres one way, so completing its out-and-back is nearly five kilometres, not a quick 2.4-kilometre loop. A separate extended circuit is 5.4 kilometres. There is no need to complete either to enjoy it.
The tourism listing marks the trail wheelchair-accessible, but confirm your intended entry point and current surface conditions, particularly after rain, snow or ice. Only part of the route is described as illuminated; use daylight for an unfamiliar walk. Venta walking trail.
Seasonal replacement: Riežupe Sand Caves
If the caves are your priority, replace the river walk rather than adding an excursion to it. Have a leisurely breakfast and arrange transport for a confirmed late-morning guided visit in summer. In April or October, book noon or later and move lunch until after the tour. The operator places the caves about five kilometres from the old bridge; budget roughly 15–25 minutes each way by car, plus check-in and any approach walk. Confirm the tour duration and language when booking.
The operator lists a season from April through 31 October, with closure November–March. April and October are currently listed as 12:00–16:00, with a request to recheck before travelling; May, June and September normally start at 11:00, as do July and August. Tours are guided only. Bring a warm layer for the approximately 8°C interior and shoes suitable for a wet floor. Check suitability directly for young children, claustrophobia or mobility limitations; a discounted ticket category does not establish step-free access. Cave visitor information.
12:30–16:00: Lunch and one final indoor stop
Return for lunch and leave the afternoon flexible. Friday–Sunday, the museum's open collection in the former Bank of Latvia building at Dzirnavu iela 5 offers a different experience from Villa Bangert: everyday objects and regional history in a broad study collection. Give it about an hour. It currently lists 10:00–18:00 Friday–Sunday; weekday guided visits require arranging, so do not assume both museum sites share the same schedule. If closed, browse Liepājas iela and finish with coffee instead. Open collection.
Three quieter worthwhile places
- City Garden: take a side path among the sculptures rather than stopping only at the waterfall-facing edge.
- Venta riverside trail: a short outward-and-back walk gives the river a different mood from the busy bridge viewpoints.
- The open museum collection: a useful rainy-day choice on its scheduled opening days, especially for visitors who enjoy ordinary objects as much as grand rooms.
Practical planning
Kuldīga's bus station is at Adatu iela 9; allow roughly 15–25 minutes on foot to the historic centre, depending on luggage and your accommodation. For journeys from Riga, choose and verify a specific departure before fixing hotel check-in or onward plans. The tourism transport page links the bus timetables and local taxi contacts. Transport.
Cobblestones, thresholds and riverbank slopes matter more than distances for pushchairs and wheelchairs. Ask accommodation about stairs and parking before booking. Churches and towers are optional extras only when current visiting access is confirmed; historic summer hours on old maps are not a winter guarantee. On Mondays, move Villa Bangert to the other day if possible. In poor weather, shorten waterside walks rather than relying on a closed seasonal attraction as your backup.
