36 Hours on Lake Como: Varenna, Bellagio and Time by the Water

Lake Como is a whole region, not a single compact destination. For 36 hours, base yourself in Varenna and visit Bellagio across the water. This gives you gardens, village streets and the ferry experience without losing half the trip to long lake journeys. Como city, at the southern end, is a different base with its own attractions; do not assume you can casually add it to this central-lake itinerary.

Arrive the previous evening if possible. Varenna’s railway connection makes a car unnecessary for this plan, while staying overnight lets you enjoy the waterfront outside the busiest day-trip period. Choose accommodation with its access in mind: a lake view may come with steep steps and a difficult luggage carry.

Research checked: 16 October 2026. The linked operator calendars were consulted on this date. Ferry schedules, garden seasons and weather closures change; travel times below are estimates unless specifically attributed.

Day 1: Stay on Varenna’s shore

09:00–10:00 | Breakfast and a short waterfront walk

Begin with coffee and breakfast near your accommodation, then follow the waterfront toward the village centre. Allow time for narrow sections and other pedestrians rather than expecting an uninterrupted brisk walk. Keep children close beside the water and do not sit them on railings for photographs. A compact stroller is easier than a large one, but steps and slopes still require a planned route.

Do not start by joining a ferry queue. Today is for getting to know the shore where you are sleeping, with one substantial garden visit and a long lunch.

10:00–12:00 | Villa Monastero

Walk to Villa Monastero, allowing approximately 20–30 minutes from the ferry area. Choose the botanical garden alone or the combined house-and-garden ticket according to your interests and the opening calendar. The long lakeside setting rewards an unhurried visit; it is not necessary to cover every path or room before appreciating it.

October 2026: the garden is listed open daily 10:00–18:00, while the house museum closes Tuesdays. In November, both normally close Tuesdays and Wednesdays and otherwise run 10:00–17:00, with a longer November 1 opening. December has additional holiday exceptions, including Christmas Day closure. On a closed date, switch this visit to an open day if possible or keep the morning for the village and waterfront. Villa Monastero’s dated calendar

The operator explains that online tickets are date-specific but their printed entry time is not binding. Read the refund terms before buying; travel delays do not automatically qualify for a refund. Check the exact accessible route and assistance requirements directly rather than equating a concession ticket with unrestricted access. Accessibility information

12:15–14:00 | Lunch with a lake connection

Return toward the centre for lunch. Look for rice or risotto with perch, or missoltini, the salted and dried lake fish often served with polenta. These are distinctive regional choices, but ask what is available and where the fish comes from rather than assuming every restaurant serves the day’s local catch. Fish dishes can contain bones; select something straightforward for younger children.

Polenta and regional cheeses offer another direction, and a plain pasta or vegetable dish can be a useful alternative. Ask about the stock or sauce if vegetarian. The local tourism guide places lake fish and mountain-influenced dishes together within the area’s cuisine. North Lake Como tourism guide

14:00–16:30 | San Giorgio and an afternoon without a timetable

Spend time around Piazza San Giorgio. Enter the church if it is open for visitors and no service is taking place; otherwise, the square and nearby lanes still make a worthwhile short circuit. Its historic paintings and furnishings merit attention, but this is not a reason to interrupt worship or assume a published tourist schedule where none has been confirmed. Varenna tourism’s church background

Then stop for coffee, read beside the lake or return to your room. Leaving an afternoon partly open is deliberate. A castle climb or a long trail would change the physical demands of the day, especially in heat or rain, and is not essential to this route.

18:30–20:30 | Dinner in Varenna

Reserve dinner in the village and confirm the kitchen’s serving times, especially outside the main season. Choose a restaurant for its menu and location rather than a promise of a sunset table: daylight, clouds and the mountains determine what you actually see. Finish with a short waterfront stroll if the surfaces are dry and well lit.

Before bed, check tomorrow’s ferry departures and returns, including whether your date uses the weekday or Sunday/holiday timetable. Save a sensible return option and an earlier backup.

Day 2: Cross to Bellagio

09:00–10:00 | Ferry, with time for the queue

After breakfast, take a suitable ferry to Bellagio. A direct crossing is often around 15–20 minutes, but the vessel, intermediate stops and waiting time matter. Allow roughly 45–75 minutes from leaving accommodation to being ready to explore Bellagio. Check the actual sailing rather than using the estimated crossing time as a connection guarantee.

The navigation operator currently publishes Lake Como schedules valid October 5–November 1, 2026, with separate weekday and Sunday/holiday central-lake ferry tables. Do not accidentally use the winter calendar for Lake Garda or Maggiore on the same website. After November 1, obtain the new Como timetable. Official Lake Como schedules and notices

10:00–12:00 | Villa Melzi’s gardens in season

Walk approximately 15–25 minutes along the lakeside toward the Villa Melzi gardens. Spend 60–90 minutes on the paths, noticing planting, sculptures and changing views across the water. The main villa remains private: the visitor ticket covers the gardens, chapel and museum, not its residential interior.

The operator’s live page lists autumn reductions: 10:00–18:30 October 12–24, then 10:00–17:00 from October 25, with last entry half an hour earlier. It names November 1 as the seasonal closure date; confirm whether your intended visit falls before the final admission day. Ordinary garden visits do not require advance reservations, but guided visits do. Winter opening should not be assumed from an old special-tour announcement. Villa Melzi’s own visitor information

If closed, replace this block with Bellagio’s public waterfront and a café, then an earlier lunch. Do not count on walking through the closed estate as a shortcut to another hamlet.

12:00–14:00 | Lunch and Bellagio’s lanes

Return toward the centre for lunch, then choose a short loop through the stepped lanes. Bellagio can be very busy, so take side streets only where they are public and keep shop entrances clear. A sit-down meal is more comfortable than trying to eat while negotiating stairs and crowds. Families can shorten the shopping and save energy for the return boat.

14:00–16:30 | Pescallo, then back across the lake

For a quieter change of view, walk to Pescallo on the Lecco-facing side of the peninsula. Allow approximately 20–30 minutes each way from central Bellagio, with stairs on the traditional route. Pause at its small harbour and squares without treating residents’ doorways as viewing platforms. The local tourism association’s walking guide describes this historic fishing settlement and the connecting paths. Official Bellagio neighbourhood walk

Return for a planned ferry well before your last practical connection. If you have an onward train, leave generous time for a missed sailing, the uphill walk to Varenna-Esino and luggage collection. On a departure day with a tight connection, omit Pescallo rather than gambling on the last boat that works.

Three quieter worthwhile places

  • Pescallo: the small harbour offers a different outlook from Bellagio’s main ferry waterfront.
  • Loppia: a possible substitute for Pescallo near the southern end of the Melzi estate; use public roads when gardens are shut and avoid adding both hamlets to a short afternoon.
  • Piazza San Giorgio in Varenna: a place to pause and look at the church and village fabric away from the narrowest waterfront stretch.

Getting there and seasonal realities

Trenord currently describes direct Milano Centrale–Varenna-Esino trains taking roughly 64–65 minutes. Check your date for works or service changes, then allow approximately 15–25 minutes on foot toward waterfront accommodation, depending on luggage and its location. For wheelchair travel, verify the particular boat, landing stages and boarding assistance with Navigazione Laghi before selecting sailings. Wind, lake levels and the vessel assigned can affect practical access. Operator accessibility guidance

Winter brings shorter days, fewer services and closed businesses, while summer brings queues and heat. Keep a rain layer handy and replace exposed waterfront time when conditions deteriorate. This plan does not depend on swimming or hiring a boat: neither is necessary for a satisfying short stay on the lake.
