36 hours in Lindau: an island old town and a slower Lake Constance shore

Lindau rewards staying after the harbour photographs. Its island has painted façades, little lanes and a museum that makes sense of the town behind the waterfront. Across the causeway, the mainland shore offers a different pace: old trees, parkland and views across Lake Constance. Give each a day rather than turning a short stay into a race around three countries.

This route begins around 9am on Day 1 and finishes after dinner on Day 2. Stay on the island for easy evening walks, or near a mainland bus connection if that better suits your budget. The main museum closes Mondays: for a Sunday–Monday stay, keep it on Sunday; arriving Monday, move it to Tuesday afternoon and shorten the park outing.

Day 1: harbour, lanes and the island's story

9–10:30am: the harbour before the busiest part of the day

Have breakfast, then walk beside the harbour to take in the Bavarian lion, lighthouse and boats. There is no need to climb anything to enjoy the scene. When open and conditions permit, the New Lighthouse adds a view across rooftops and water, but its 139 steps make this an optional extra for confident walkers. The tourism listing says opening depends on weather and special events; check the actual day's notice rather than planning around an assumed timetable. Keep children beside you near quay edges. Official lighthouse information.

10:30am–12:30pm: a small church and a painted town hall

Allow 10–15 minutes to wander inland to the Peterskirche and surrounding lanes. Its wall paintings reward a quiet look; the Passion scenes are attributed to Hans Holbein the Elder, rather than definitively established as his work. The building is also a war memorial, so treat it as a reflective space. The tourism office normally lists 10am–6pm access, subject to changes. Peterskirche, visitor FAQs.

Continue past the Old Town Hall and along Maximilianstraße, taking time over the building details instead of collecting every landmark. The town hall's council chamber is not generally open to visitors; the historic library has separate access arrangements. Make the decorated exterior the dependable stop. Choose lunch nearby: cheese Spätzle makes a filling regional option, while a smaller soup or salad leaves room for an afternoon cake. Check ingredients if avoiding animal products, since cheese dishes are not automatically vegan or suitable for every vegetarian diet. Lindau food and drink.

2–3:30pm: the reopened Cavazzen

Walk roughly 5–10 minutes to the Cavazzen Museum on Marktplatz. Reopened after renovation in 2025, it is a stronger choice than another long outdoor circuit if the weather turns. Focus on the permanent town-history displays; choose a temporary exhibition only if its subject genuinely interests you. Children have hands-on stations and a character-led historical film, making a focused visit more appealing than expecting them to read every label. About the museum.

The museum currently opens Tuesday–Sunday, 10am–6pm. All bags and jackets must be deposited before entering; free storage is provided. Its step-free Cramergasse entrance, lifts and accessible ground-floor toilet make it a useful anchor for visitors with mobility needs. These facilities do not make every old-town street equally smooth. Museum visit planning.

3:30–6pm: coffee, then the Gerberschanze

Take a proper café break before walking to the Gerberschanze, about 10 minutes away at an unhurried pace. This small waterfront space, with trees and views toward the Rhine Valley, gives you a less concentrated alternative to the main harbour. Sit for a while; a stone beach does not mean swimming conditions are suitable. Return to your room before dinner rather than filling the gap with another museum. Gerberschanze.

6:30–9pm: a regional supper

Choose a restaurant whose current menu and opening day suit you. Fish can be a good choice, but ask which species is available and where it comes from rather than assuming everything is locally caught. Regional wine or apple juice fits the setting. Book an early table on summer weekends or during major events, especially for a family group, and finish with a short harbour stroll if the weather is comfortable.

Day 2: trees and water on the mainland

9:30am–12:30pm: Lindenhofpark

After breakfast, head toward Bad Schachen and Lindenhofpark. Allow roughly 45–60 minutes to walk from the island, or about 30–45 minutes for a bus journey including the connection and final walk. These are planning estimates, not timetable promises. Island services connect with the wider network; use the current planner for the appropriate line 4 connection toward Alwind. Check disruption notices, since the operator lists line 4 diversions in autumn 2026. Stadtbus journey information, current diversions.

The park is the morning's destination, not a brief stop on the way to somewhere else. Follow the public paths between mature trees and the lakeside, pause at benches, and keep the route short enough for the return journey. Admission is free and the tourism office lists year-round access, with most paths suitable for wheelchairs. That does not guarantee safe conditions during storms, snow or ice. Nearby villas and gardens can be private; an attractive gate is not an invitation to enter. Lindenhofpark.

12:30–3pm: lunch and an easy return

Eat locally if an appropriate place is open, or take a picnic and remove all litter. Return to the island after lunch, allowing time for the bus connection. Families can choose transport both ways and save their energy for the park itself. On a wet or very windy day, replace this outing with the Cavazzen if not yet visited, provided it is open, and a shorter sheltered old-town circuit.

3–9pm: keep the final afternoon flexible

Enjoy a café, browse independent shops and revisit the waterfront in different light. A short boat outing is an alternative only when an actual sailing and comfortable return fit: regular Lake Constance shipping is seasonal, and special winter cruises are separate products. Do not assume summer services run in November, or add distant Mainau to this relaxed afternoon. Finish with dinner before collecting luggage. Operator's scheduled shipping information.

Three quieter places worth the time

  • Peterskirche: a small, contemplative interior with paintings and memorial significance.
  • Gerberschanze: a waterfront pause away from the main harbour's concentration of visitors.
  • Lindenhofpark: the best reason in this itinerary to leave the island and slow down among trees.

Before you go

Distinguish Lindau-Reutin, the mainland long-distance station, from Lindau-Insel, beside the harbour. Check your actual train destination and onward connection before booking accommodation. For step-free exploration, use the tourism office's accessible island route; cobbles and tower stairs still need separate consideration. Pack layers even in summer, and use sheltered alternatives during lake storms. Accessible island route.
