36 hours in Ljubljana: bridges, Plečnik and a greener riverside
Ljubljana is compact enough to enjoy without constantly checking a map, but that is no reason to rush it. The river, bridges and market make an inviting first day; the architect Jože Plečnik's house and the quieter southern riverbank give the second day a different character. Add a castle view and a good lunch, and a short stay feels complete without bolting on Lake Bled.
This itinerary runs from breakfast on Day 1 through dinner on Day 2. Stay within an easy walk of the centre if possible. Sunday–Monday visitors should book Plečnik House for Sunday afternoon and move the castle or green spaces to Monday: the house closes Mondays. The main produce and covered market schedule is Monday–Saturday; some outdoor trading can occur on Sundays and holidays in the warmer season.
Day 1: market life and a castle above the city
9–11am: bridges and the Central Market
Start at Prešeren Square after breakfast and cross the Triple Bridge. Follow the riverside market colonnade toward the Dragon Bridge, making a short loop through the market squares rather than treating each bridge as a separate destination. This is where Plečnik's architecture works as everyday public space: shops, pedestrian connections and places to linger.
On an open morning, browse the produce and indoor food stalls. Buy something you actually want to eat and keep working entrances clear. Plan the main produce and covered-food shopping for Monday–Saturday; covered stalls have shorter Saturday hours. The operator also permits some outdoor and colonnade trading on Sundays and holidays from April to November, with vendors setting their own hours. Sunday visitors should keep a café breakfast as their dependable plan rather than expect the full weekday market. Market operator, Visit Ljubljana market guide.
If your day is a Friday in the warmer part of the year, check whether Open Kitchen is running before making it your lunch plan. It is seasonal and weather-dependent, not a daily food hall. An ordinary restaurant is the fallback.
11am–1pm: up to Ljubljana Castle
Walk to the lower funicular station near the market. The actual ride is about a minute, but allow 20–30 minutes for reaching the station, ticketing and a possible queue. Walking uphill is another option, taking roughly 20–30 minutes at a moderate pace; choose it for the walk itself, not because it looks effortless on a map. Funicular information.
Spend 60–90 minutes at the castle, choosing the history displays or Museum of Puppetry according to your interests. The tower is optional: children and tired legs can enjoy the visit without every stair. Check what your ticket includes before buying, particularly the funicular combination. Castle and transport hours differ; the current operator table lists castle visits from 9am–6pm in October–April and 9am–8pm in May–September, with the funicular running later. New Year's Day starts at 10am and New Year's Eve closes early. Current opening hours.
The funicular and several castle spaces are accessible, but the entire medieval complex is not. Use the operator's specific access list, or arrange its adapted guided tour if useful. Castle access.
1–3pm: lunch and the old town
Descend for lunch, then wander the streets around Mestni trg and Stari trg. Try štruklji, rolled dumplings available with sweet or savoury fillings, rather than assuming they are always a dessert. Cottage cheese, tarragon, apple and walnut are among the possibilities; ask about allergens. A meat-free ričet can be another option, but recipes differ and some versions include meat. Taste Ljubljana, štruklji guide.
3–6pm: a park-sized afternoon
Walk back across the centre toward Tivoli, allowing roughly 20–30 minutes from the old town, and choose a short park circuit rather than a strenuous woodland hike. The paths and open space make a welcome change after the market and castle. Take a café break and return before you are tired; in heavy rain or strong wind, shorten the outing and spend more time indoors instead. Ljubljana's central sights and green spaces.
6:30–9pm: dinner beside the river
Reserve somewhere with a menu that appeals, especially for a weekend group. Carniolan sausage is a Slovenian classic rather than an exclusively Ljubljana invention; tarragon potica offers a sweet local connection if available. After dinner, enjoy a short riverside stroll. Keep children back from the water and stay alert to bicycles and service vehicles even in areas that feel largely pedestrian.
Day 2: the architect's home and quieter riverbanks
9–11:30am: walk to Trnovo and visit Plečnik House
After breakfast, walk south along the river toward Trnovo, allowing 25–35 minutes from the central bridges. Book a 10am or 11am Plečnik House visit ahead. The original home can only be visited on a guided tour, and public groups are limited to seven people. That small capacity is a reason to reserve, not to assume you can join the next departure.
The museum opens Tuesday–Sunday 10am–6pm, with hourly home tours and the last normally at 5pm. It closes on 1 January, 1 November and 25 December, and has shorter Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve hours. The permanent exhibition can be visited separately if the home tour is full. Ask about suitability for young children. The preserved home is unsuitable for wheelchair access: its narrow passages, thresholds and stairs are not overcome safely by the temporary ramps. The newer exhibition section is the more accessible alternative; confirm your specific requirements before booking. Museum booking and hours, Urban Planning Institute accessibility assessment.
For a Sunday–Monday stay, move this booked visit to Sunday afternoon in place of Tivoli, then use Monday for the park, southern riverbank and garden. Do not simply arrive at the house on Monday.
11:30am–1:30pm: Trnovski pristan and lunch
Continue to Trnovski pristan, the riverside embankment shaped by Plečnik. Its broad steps are a place to sit and watch the water, not an invitation to swim. Keep younger children on the upper paths and avoid slippery lower steps after rain. Allow half an hour here before lunch in the Trnovo area or a return toward the centre. Official embankment description.
1:30–4pm: the Botanical Garden
If you want another quiet hour, continue toward the Botanical Garden on Ižanska cesta, allowing roughly 20–30 minutes from Trnovo depending on your lunch stop. Its outdoor collection is a modest, worthwhile destination for plant lovers rather than a grand all-day attraction. The garden's schedule, updated in September 2026, lists daily outdoor opening, closing at 5pm November–March, 7pm April–October and 8pm June–August. The tropical greenhouse has separate admission and hours. Garden's current schedule.
Leave plenty of time to walk or take transport back to your accommodation. A final café and dinner are enough for the evening; there is no need to squeeze in a regional day trip.
Three quieter places
- Plečnik House: intimate architecture and personal history, with advance booking essential for the small home tours.
- Trnovski pristan: a slower riverside stretch beyond the busiest central bridges.
- The Botanical Garden: a focused green escape, with seasonal closing times that suit an early-afternoon visit.
Arriving and leaving
Ljubljana station works have involved temporary platforms and altered access. Check your specific train and platform instructions, and add a generous station buffer rather than relying on an old map. Slovenian Railways service information. The central itinerary is mostly walkable, but use local transport when fatigue, heat or mobility needs make the longer southern loop unappealing.
