36 Hours in Seville: Palace Courtyards, Triana Tiles and Time in the Shade

Verified: 16 October 2026. A draft itinerary; opening arrangements and admission calendars should be checked for your dates. Travel times below are planning estimates.

Seville rewards looking closely: a tiled bench, the pattern of plasterwork around a doorway, the transition from a bright square into a shaded courtyard. Its great monuments deserve time, but the city is also enjoyable between them. This route gives the first day to the Alcázar and cathedral, then changes scale with parkland and the ceramic traditions of Triana. It leaves room for lunch and a rest instead of treating the hottest afternoon hours as a walking challenge.

Before you arrive

Stay around the historic centre or within a short walk of a useful bus or tram stop. Santa Justa railway station is outside the monumental core; allow roughly 15–25 minutes by taxi, longer in traffic, or 30–45 minutes using local transport and walking. The airport's EA bus serves central transport hubs including Prado de San Sebastián and Plaza de Armas. Budget approximately 35–50 minutes for the bus journey, plus waiting and the final walk. Check the current route rather than assuming it stops beside your hotel. Aena airport bus information

Reserve the Alcázar and cathedral independently through their official websites. Keep enough space between slots for queues, lunch and security checks. For the Alcázar, children through age 13 need a free ticket and an accompanying adult; free admission does not mean they can simply join an adult's booking without a ticket. Bring documentary proof for reductions and follow the identification instructions issued with your tickets. Alcázar visitor information

Day 1: The monumental heart

09:30–12:15 | Real Alcázar

Have breakfast before your timed entry and spend the morning with the palace courtyards, decorative rooms and gardens. A focused two-and-a-half-hour visit is more satisfying than rushing through in an hour. Let children look for repeating tile patterns and reflections, then change pace outside rather than expecting them to study every room.

The published opening time is 09:30 year-round, with shorter admission hours from October through March. The operator lists closures on 1 and 6 January, Good Friday and 25 December. Garden or room closures can also occur for weather, maintenance or operational reasons. The upper royal apartments are a separate option; do not add them automatically to an already substantial morning. Ask about the appropriate accessible route and any temporary restrictions before booking. Official planning and closure information

12:30–14:45 | Lunch and a proper pause

Stay close to Santa Cruz for lunch, then return to your accommodation or settle somewhere cool. Try spinach with chickpeas, potatoes dressed with oil and vinegar, or fish in adobo. Gazpacho is particularly welcome in warm weather. Ask about ingredients: tapas are not automatically vegetarian, gluten-free or suitable for allergies, and portion sizes vary. Ordering two or three dishes first is easier than committing to a large spread. Seville's tapas traditions

15:00–17:00 | Cathedral and an optional Giralda climb

Book an afternoon cathedral entry, which also avoids planning a Sunday morning sightseeing visit during worship. Take time with the enormous interior before deciding whether to climb the Giralda. The tower's ramps do not make it step-free: the published rules describe 34 ramps and a final flight of 17 steps. Baby strollers and wheelchairs are prohibited on the tower ascent. The rules also exclude pregnant visitors and people with specified mobility or health conditions; check them before booking. Families with tired children, or anyone who cannot manage the ascent, can enjoy the cathedral without it.

The cathedral's general hours page and seasonal announcements can show different schedules. Treat the dated booking calendar as decisive, and expect religious services to alter access. Modest clothing is appropriate; follow the ticket's entrance instructions rather than joining the first queue you see. Cathedral hours · Visitor rules and Giralda access

17:15–evening | Santa Cruz without a checklist

Wander a few lanes, pause in a small square and head toward the Jardines de Murillo if the weather is comfortable. Keep this short after two substantial interiors. Dinner can be the evening's only commitment. If flamenco is a priority, book a specific performance after checking its duration, minimum age, late-entry rules and whether children must remain silent throughout; a late show is not essential to the itinerary.

Day 2: Parkland and the other bank

09:00–10:45 | Plaza de España and María Luisa Park

Walk or take a short taxi ride to Plaza de España. The great semicircle belongs to the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition, and its tiled provincial benches make a good slow-looking activity. Explore the ground-level plaza and bridges, then move into the park for shade. Event installations can restrict parts of the square, so do not build the morning around guaranteed access to every corner. Spain's official Plaza de España overview

Continue toward Plaza de América only if everyone still wants to walk. Allow around 15–20 minutes each way from the main plaza, with extra time for stops. The surrounding museum buildings are interesting from outside; this route does not require another museum ticket. Plaza de América

11:30–13:00 | Triana's ceramic story

Transfer to Triana, allowing roughly 15–25 minutes by taxi or 35–50 minutes on foot from the park, depending on your starting point. Visit Centro Cerámica Triana, housed in the former Santa Ana factory, for kilns, tools and the process behind the tiles seen throughout Seville. The tourism office currently lists Tuesday–Sunday opening; verify the day's arrangements. On Monday, replace the interior with the neighbourhood's streets, ceramics shops and riverfront rather than waiting at a closed door. Centro Cerámica Triana

13:00–15:30 | Lunch and the riverside

Eat in Triana, then take a short walk along the river before collecting luggage. Leave generous time for a train or airport connection. The view back toward the historic centre is a satisfying finish without adding another climb. Triana neighbourhood guide

Three quieter worthwhile places

  • Jardines de Murillo: a shaded pause beside the busiest monumental quarter, subject to park closures during adverse weather. Garden information
  • Plaza de América: a gentler extension within María Luisa Park, especially away from event days.
  • Centro Cerámica Triana: a smaller, more focused interior than the headline monuments, useful when heat makes outdoor wandering unappealing.

Practical finishing touches

Spring and autumn often make walking easier, but major celebrations can bring intense demand and changed routes. In summer, carry water, use shade and protect the midday rest. Cobbles, crowded lanes and tower stairs need separate accessibility planning even though much of central Seville is relatively level. For a family, dropping the Giralda or shortening the park walk is better than sacrificing meals and breaks.
