36 Hours in Znojmo: Underground Passages, Valley Views and Moravian Flavours

Verified: 16 October 2026. Confirm live admission conditions and holiday timetables before travel. Walking durations are planning estimates, allowing for hills.

Znojmo is a city to experience at several levels: streets and squares above ground, a network of passages below, and green slopes dropping towards the Dyje. Its appeal is the ease of changing pace. A morning underground can lead to lunch in the centre and an afternoon looking across the valley, without spending the day moving between distant attractions.

This first-visit route gives the historic core a full day and saves the second for a museum and woodland walk. It does not assume the delicate paintings in St Catherine’s Rotunda are always accessible. That distinction matters: the building's visitor access depends on both its seasonal calendar and conservation conditions.

Before you start

Stay in or near the historic centre. From the railway and bus-station area, budget roughly 15–25 minutes on foot to the central squares, longer with luggage; use a taxi if cobbles and slopes are a concern. Check your actual arrival point and regional connections through IDS JMK. Its current system permits bank-card payment on Znojmo buses; keep the same card available for inspection and follow the ticket machine's instructions for the journey you need. Do not apply city-only ticket rules to a regional excursion. Official transport guidance

Day 1: Below the streets, above the river

09:00–10:00 | Breakfast and a first orientation

Start around Masarykovo náměstí, then make a short loop towards Obroková and the town hall tower. Look at the changing width of the lanes and locate your underground tour entrance before stopping for coffee. There is no need to climb immediately after arriving; a little orientation makes the later view more meaningful.

10:00–11:30 | The classic underground route

Book the classic route at Znojmo Underground, entering at Slepičí trh 2. The roughly hour-long tour includes atmospheric sound and light effects, so this is more theatrical than an empty series of medieval cellars. Regular opening is daily, 09:00–17:00 from September through June and until 18:00 in July–August; the final tour begins an hour before closing. Choose a specific departure rather than treating opening time as a promise of immediate entry. Underground operator

Allow at least 15 minutes before your tour and follow your booking confirmation: ticket collection and payment arrangements differ from entry with a purchased QR-code ticket. Those rules also require sturdy closed shoes and recommend warm clothing for approximately 12°C conditions. There are narrow passages, steps and uneven surfaces; the tour is unsuitable for claustrophobia or significant mobility limitations. The operator says it is unsuitable for children under four. Ask about English audio guidance at the desk. Current visitor rules

Do not book an adrenaline route as a family substitute: those routes and the civil-defence shelter route are for ages 15 and above, with the operator requiring a legal guardian's accompaniment for young participants. Families with small children can replace the underground visit with the woodland outing described below.

12:00–13:30 | Lunch with a local accent

Return to the centre for lunch. Look for a Czech cooked dish such as a roast with dumplings, or ask what seasonal vegetarian option is available; sauces and soups may contain meat stock. Try Znojmo-style pickled cucumbers alongside a meal if offered. The city's cucumber tradition is substantial enough to have its own festival, but the annual event is not a daily visitor attraction. 13:30–14:30 | The reopened town hall tower, optionally

The town hall tower has reopened following renovation. Its current October–April calendar is Tuesday–Sunday, 10:00–12:15 and 13:00–16:00; warmer months have longer hours and daily access. On a winter Monday, keep this as an exterior stop or move the climb to Tuesday. Confirm the climb's physical requirements before buying tickets if stairs are difficult. A valley view later in the route remains a worthwhile alternative without committing to the tower. Tower operator

14:30–17:00 | St Nicholas and the castle side of town

Walk towards St Nicholas’s Church and the neighbouring viewpoints, allowing 10–20 minutes with pauses. Enter the church only when permitted outside worship. Continue towards the castle and rotunda area, keeping the afternoon flexible enough to sit rather than moving from ticket desk to ticket desk.

For 2026, castle and rotunda admission is limited to weekends in October, ending on 25 October; neither should anchor a winter itinerary. In the main season, check the dated calendar rather than extrapolating October hours. The rotunda can close in rain or unsuitable internal conditions even during advertised opening hours. Check the museum's live indicator and call if the reading is unclear; never interpret a seasonal timetable as guaranteed access. Museum calendar Rotunda conservation conditions

Evening | Dinner and a small taste of the region

Choose dinner in the centre. Adults interested in wine can ask for a local glass with food rather than building the evening around driving to several cellars. ZnojmoRegion's wine-tourism listings are a starting point for a separately reserved tasting. Non-drinkers lose nothing from this itinerary: the streets, food and views stand on their own. Day 2: A museum, then breathing space

10:00–11:30 | The Minorite monastery museum

Visit the South Moravian Museum's Minorite monastery site for a different perspective on the area. This is a practical year-round choice, including Mondays. Regular weekday hours are 09:00–11:30 and 12:00–17:00; weekends are 10:00–17:00. Check holiday exceptions. Accessibility is partial, covering specified rooms rather than the entire building, so contact staff about your needs beforehand. Museum opening and access information

12:00–15:30 | Lunch and the Gránice valley

Eat before heading into the valley, carrying water rather than relying on seasonal refreshments. The Hugo salamander nature trail is approximately 2.4 kilometres and includes carved figures and activities particularly suited to children. Allow 90 minutes to two hours for the trail, plus access from and return to the elevated centre. Ask tourist information for the most suitable approach: the relatively easy valley trail does not make every hillside connection equally easy.

The regional tourism organisation describes the surfaced woodland route as suitable for all-terrain pushchairs. Mud, ice and fallen branches can still change conditions. Stay on marked paths and return before dusk; in poor weather, shorten the walk or spend longer at the museum. Do not promise children a sighting of a real salamander. Official regional trail guide

Three quieter worthwhile places

  • Gránice valley: the best longer green break in this itinerary, especially away from busy family periods.
  • Karolíniny sady: hillside gardens below St Nicholas, rewarding in good weather but unsuitable as an assumed step-free shortcut. National heritage catalogue
  • Rajská vineyard viewpoint: a different angle on the valley below the church. Treat any tasting pavilion as a separately confirmed seasonal business. Regional tourism guide

Leave your final afternoon flexible for luggage and transport. Festival weekends need accommodation booked earlier and a fresh check of local closures; winter visits benefit from shorter outdoor loops and fewer promises of seasonal interiors.
